FMS Human Resources Conclave 2008
'HR Outsourcing- Sustainability in the long run'
Praxis-The HR-OB Society of Faculty of Management Studies, Delhi organized the FMS Human Resource Conclave 2008 on the theme, 'HR Outsourcing- Sustainability in the long run' on 6th September 2008. The conclave was held at Convention Centre, Delhi University.
The conclave was flagged off by the keynote speaker, Mr. Oscar Fernandes, the Minister of State(Independent Charge) for Labor and Employment. Mr. Fernandes spoke about the outsourcing scenario in India and the many dangers that outsourcing posed, for e.g. loss of confidentiality. He spoke of outsourcing as a tool to bring down costs and also to avoid complications arising from the complex labor laws in our country.
Post lunch, a Workshop was conducted by Ms. Gauri Sarin, President, Approach Talent Solutions where she explained the concept of Human Resource Outsourcing since it was still a new concept for the students, and why it is used. The discussion centered around the various HR services and the HR functions that are outsourced, the benefits as well as the limitations of HRO. Hence these perspectives helped the students appreciate even more the agenda of the Conclave i.e. HRO: sustainability in the long run.
The 2-hour session discussed the issue of why companies need to outsource HR functions and which functions they outsource and what are the major places/companies which deal with Human Resource Outsourcing (HRO). To make the session a greater learning experience as well as more interactive, the students were given two case studies: one discussed by Ms. Sarin herself and the other by the students themselves. Hence, it was a great learning experience and helped us understand that it is imperative for any Business management student to be interested in HR and hence HRO, which shows the same promise as IT outsourcing did.
She also touched upon the fact that though certain HR functions like payroll and benefits have been outsourced to companies since a long time now, the spectrum is slowly expanding to employee background check, healthcare, employee relocation and incentives. Also it is expected to grow in the near future and provide greater opportunities for the HR professional as well.

It featured towering industry experts and faculty members who discussed the new paradigms in Human Resources in the industry sectors of Manufacturing and Services.
The first panel focused on the Manufacturing Sector. Mr.P.K.Sinha made an interesting observation that the dynamic workforce is changing the rules of the game; he quoted instances of increase in practices such as working from home, flexitime and so on, as well as changing office layouts to incorporate more 'parking places'. Ms. Gauri Sarin observed that movement across sectors requires unlearning and then learning afresh. She also remarked that increasingly, executives are looking for cross functional exposure.
